Double Jump, Pillow Pile!

Jumping off of the couch onto pillows, or: one way to eat up 45 minutes before bedtime.

(And it wore them the heck out, too.)

You should have heard all the giggling.  Constant, from-the-gut, full-on, toddler giggling.

This may look as though Brooklyn has no fear, just like Caden, but let me reassure you that our delicate princess remains her cautious and careful self.  Caden just walked until there was no couch left, until gravity plummeted him downward onto the pillows, whereas Brooklyn walked to the edge, carefully sat down, and pushed herself off the remaining two inches to the ground.  You go, sister.

I'd apologize for the blurriness, but this is pretty much how it looked in real time.

"Outta my way!  I'll show you how carefully this is done."

And sometimes we lost our pants.

Seventeen Months

Eat.  Three meals a day (7:30 am, 1:00ish pm, 5 pm) and 2 snacks (9:30/10 am and 3 pm). Caden has gotten a bit pickier this month, and Brooklyn actually seems less picky.  They are at least more similar now in things they will or won't eat.  (Though, really, it depends on the day.)  I don't think I've mentioned this before, but they seem to really enjoy going out to eat.  They almost never squirm and fidget in their high chairs, and they like watching other people in the restaurant, too.  They are much more content sitting in a restaurant and eating-and for a longer period of time-than they ever are at home!

Sleep.  Bedtime at 7 pm, sleep for 11-12 hours.  Nap at 11 am for 1 1/2-2 1/2 hours.  Brooklyn remains a champion sleeper, while Caden had a few rough patches this month.  He will wake up inconsolable, just absolutely crying his poor little heart out, and the only thing that calms him down is sleeping in our bed.  He did this a few months ago and eventually got over it, so I'm hopeful this is just a phase again.  Nothing seems to be wrong with him...it's like he just misses Tyson and me!

Play.  This past month they have definitely been talking!  They both say "Dada", "duck" ("duh!"), and "no no".  Brooklyn also says "hi", "ball", and "uh-oh" ("uh uh uh uh oh oh oh"). They also do several animal sounds: cow ("mmmmm"), horse ("nay-nay"), sheep ("ba ba ba"), fish (*smacking lips*), butterfly (not really a sound, but they flap their arms like wings), and rooster ("doo-doo" for cock-a-doodle-doo).  They are both copying words a lot more (Brooklyn more than Caden), and have said things like "cheese", "bus", and "giraffe" (yes really!), though they wouldn't say these without being prompted.

Caden continues to push forward physically.  There is nothing he won't attempt.  He is an expert climber, (ridiculously fast up the stairs, climbs on top of the ottoman, and is thisclose to getting up on the couch by himself), and has also gotten really good at going down stairs sideways, using the railing for support.  He has his fair share of tumbles and their associated bumps, bruises, and scrapes, simply because he can't slow down or bother to watch where he is going.  Luckily, falls rarely bother him, and usually he's up and going again in no time.

Brooklyn is very social (y'know, unless I ask her to be), and loves to wave at everyone at the store or on the playground.  She also waves bye-bye to airplanes in the sky, and dogs as we see them out for a walk.  She's just so generally happy and smile-y, and loves to be around other people.  Generally Caden is the ringleader for getting into trouble (though not always!) and she picks up right away on whatever he is doing and joins in, giggling the entire time.  She gets frustrated when Caden does things that she can't yet, (i.e. climb on top of the ottoman), and while I think she's actually physically capable of pretty much anything Caden can do, she's just so darn cautious and careful that she won't do it right away!

They are both very cuddly, Caden more so, and he in particular will run over to give an unexpected hug.  Brooklyn is more affectionate with Caden than he is with her, and will often give him spontaneous hugs and kisses.  They also interact with each other more; Booklyn chases Caden around the room, arms outstretched, with a big grin saying "ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka" (tickle tickle tickle).  They both convulse in laughter when she does end up "tickling" him, though it seems the chase is half the fun.  They also like what I'll call obstacle courses, and can be found several times a day crawling under a combination of tables and chairs, in the same looped pattern, over and over and over again.

Big Chip 2015

Some posts don't need any words.

(Okay, except for a few in parentheses.  You know I can't resist.)

(After doubting that they would ever dare to go near the cold lake water, (i.e. not bath water temp pool water they are used to), Caden and Brooklyn immediately proved me wrong by running right in the first day, and never looked back.)

(Beer?  Who, me?)

(Lots 'o lovin to go around.)

(And skeptical looks.)

(And these two starved.  There was absolutely no food to go around and they never ate anything.  Ever.)

(*Sarcasm alert!*)

(Also, nobody wanted to play with them and Caden and Brooklyn got absolutely no attention whatsoever.)

(*Double sarcasm alert!*)

(Definitely voguing for the camera already.)

(But the most LOLs of all were had by throwing hair products into the water.  Because the bottles float.  Get it?  I dunno...seriously, I think this was the most fun they had the entire trip.)

(This picture sums up how they felt by the end of the trip.)

(In other words, it was a perfect time at the lake.)

Big Chip, A History (Sort Of)

When my mom was younger, her parents and their six kids, and their neighbors and their eight kids, and some of their other neighbors with not quite as many kids, decided to take a vacation together during the summer, somewhere "up north", to a resort on a lake in Minnesota.  Somehow my mom's family fit everyone, and their luggage, into something like a station wagon.  I realize that things like car seats and booster seats and luxuries like seat belts weren't really required then, but I'm still not quite sure exactly how they made this work.

Though the venue changed those first few years, it's remained constant for almost 40 years now.  (I feel like people have been saying it's the 38th or 39th year for, oh, at least 5 years now.  I figure we've got to hit 40 one of these times.)  My grandparents brought their kids, and then their kids brought their kids, and now us kids bring our own kids...and every year, the Saturday after the Fourth of July, we continue to head up to "Big Chip".

Being fabulous on the beach.

Once upon a time, I fished.  Then I realized that things like worms, and leeches, and the fish themselves were kind of slimy and gross.

...fast forward several years since I apparently have no scanned images of my middle to high school years (and that's probably a good thing)...

And last year Caden and Brooklyn got to make their debut.

Hopefully they enjoy the water a bit more this year.

Excited (now that I've actually started packing) to head up to Big Chip!

Life Lately

Scrambling to do some laundry and feel somewhat productive before we leave on Friday for our annual venture up to Big Chip.  Okay, so I have a second load of laundry in the wash, the first is in the dryer, and I haven't packed a darn thing yet.  I haven't even made a list of what to pack yet.  (Wut?)  I know, who is this person?  We're only leaving in, oh...approximately 48 hours...

So I might as well post up some cute pictures of my kids.  Packing?  Meh.  Pictures?  Sure!

Too many hair clips.

More pool fun on the deck.

(Which reminds me that the pool needs to be deflated and added to the (nonexistent) pack list.  Check.)

Some fun at the park on the Fourth.

And don't you dare cut up Caden's apple into individual slices.

He's got eight front teeth and two whole molars...he can take bites like a man now.

(Do you want some?)
